Global Learning at Guatemala

In early March, MIS students traveled to Guatemala alongside Head of School Ashley Scott as part of our global travel program—an experience rooted in our commitment to developing globally minded, compassionate problem-solvers.

Based in San Pedro on Lake Atitlán, students lived with a local host family, shared daily meals, and engaged in three hours of Spanish instruction—immersing themselves in language and culture beyond the classroom.

As part of our course-embedded travel experiences, students explored Mayan traditions through weaving and chocolate-making, supported a local women’s cooperative, and partnered with a nonprofit to connect with local students. Through these meaningful interactions, they practiced what it means to be responsive citizens in an interconnected world.

From visiting nearby pueblos to a sunrise hike up La Nariz de Indio, every experience deepened their understanding of place, perspective, and community.

At MIS, the world is our classroom—and through purposeful, immersive travel, students grow in empathy, cultural understanding, and independence as they learn to see themselves as active participants in a global community.
