MIS ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ARE...

Picture
Problem-solvers.
There is no problem that is too big for even our youngest students to solve. Through the problem-based learning model of instruction, teachers at MIS provide students with real world learning opportunities that require complex thinking, collaboration, and various modes of communication in order to come up with a solution. This type of experiential learning takes students far beyond rote skills and worksheets, and into a world where they get to be the engineers, artists, biologists, architects, and authors in charge of bringing change to their communities.

Innovators.
Gifted learners thrive on learning opportunities that allow them to explore their curiosities and uncover their passions. We meet these needs by providing our students with choices that allow them to create their ideal learning environment and examine abstractions in unique ways. Whether they are inventing a new Mars rover, coding their own video game, or developing a draft of a modern day Bill of Rights, our students' minds are always at work.

Explorers.
At MIS, we make the world our classroom through meaningful travel experiences. Beginning in 3rd grade, students get the opportunity to take a multi-day trip to Savannah and Tybee Island. While there, they see Georgia history come to life, and also participate in a marine science course at a local 4H Center. In 4th grade, students take their first MIS plane trip to a destination within the United States. This year's destination - Washington, DC! White House, here we come!

THE ELEMENTARY STUDENT EXPERIENCE

A message from our coordinator

Picture
Greetings! My name is Grace Ward, and I am the Elementary School Coordinator here at MIS. I am honored to welcome you to our school webpage, and hope that you will find the information on this site useful. As the elementary years are a highly formative time in a child’s life, we believe it is our duty to serve each of our students in a way that instills a love for learning, develops a growth mindset, and encourages critical thinking through various lenses. We bring this to our classrooms through real-world problem solving, regular and individualized social and emotional support, and ongoing professional development for our elementary faculty. Please enjoy browsing through our site to get a glimpse into how we bring all of this to life, and do not hesitate to reach out at any time should you have any questions or would like to know more about the magic of the MIS elementary school.

All my best,
Grace Ward
Elementary School Coordinator

Student stories

“At MIS, anything is possible. An art class decorated a piano for a park a few years ago. Our steel band makes some of the finest music I’ve ever heard. Student’s opinions were considered when designing new spaces for campus. Recently, I finished my first year here. And I loved it. Staying for 4 days in DC, creating fictional short stories in ELA, or watching plays by older students, every activity has a purpose in helping our minds expand. Growth and imagination are encouraged, and strict rules are not. The teachers know something to teach everyone, and nobody is held back. It’s truly a place where no one waits to learn.” - Taylor, 4th Grade
